While millions of graduates enter the workforce every year, employability remains a major concern. Only around 54–56% of graduates are considered employable by industry standards, meaning nearly half of the talent pool is not job-ready despite holding degrees . In some studies, the number drops even further, with only about 42% of graduates meeting employability benchmarks in certain roles . This is not a talent shortage problem. It is a skills mismatch problem.

At the same time, hiring behavior has evolved rapidly. A significant percentage of Indian employers are now prioritizing skills over degrees when making hiring decisions. Reports suggest that nearly 80% of employers are shifting toward skill-first hiring models, with many actively looking for demonstrable ability rather than academic pedigree . In fact, surveys indicate that recruiters increasingly value practical experience, problem-solving ability, and real-world readiness over theoretical knowledge . This shift is not temporary. It is structural.

The reason behind this transition is simple. The nature of work itself has changed. Industries driven by AI, automation, and digital transformation require professionals who can adapt quickly, build systems, and deliver outcomes from day one. Degrees provide foundational knowledge, but they do not always translate into execution. Employers are no longer willing to invest months in training candidates who lack practical exposure. They want individuals who can contribute immediately.

This gap becomes even more visible when we look at underemployment. A large percentage of graduates end up working in roles that do not match their qualifications, with only a small fraction actually using their degree in a relevant capacity . This indicates that the issue is not just unemployment, but misalignment between education and industry needs.

Another critical factor is the rise of automation. As AI continues to replace repetitive and entry-level tasks, the bar for entry into the workforce is rising. Companies are reducing dependency on large volumes of junior hires and instead focusing on fewer, more capable individuals who can operate at higher levels of complexity. This has intensified the demand for specialized skills such as AI development, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and data engineering. At the same time, soft skills like communication, adaptability, and problem-solving are becoming equally important, as many graduates struggle to translate knowledge into practical application .

The result is a clear divide. On one side, there are candidates with degrees but limited practical exposure. On the other, there are individuals who may not have prestigious academic backgrounds but possess strong portfolios, real-world projects, and demonstrable skills. Increasingly, it is the second group that is gaining attention.

This does not mean degrees have become irrelevant. Degrees still provide structure, credibility, and foundational understanding. However, they are no longer sufficient on their own. The modern hiring equation is not “degree versus skills.” It is “degree plus skills, or skills alone if proven strongly.”

The real question for students, job seekers, and even educators is not whether to pursue a degree, but how to complement it with meaningful skill development. Building projects, contributing to real-world problems, understanding tools and systems, and continuously adapting to new technologies are no longer optional. They are essential.

India is not lacking talent. It is standing at a transition point. The system is slowly moving from qualification-based validation to capability-based validation. Those who understand this shift early will not just find jobs; they will define the future of work.

If this perspective resonated with you, share it with someone navigating their career path today. The more we talk about the gap between degrees and skills, the faster we can close it.

Follow Chebrolu Sunny Talks for the next episode, where we break down what candidates must actually build in 2026 to stay relevant in this changing hiring landscape.

“Why Waste Your Life for People Who Don’t Even Understand Elders repeat them, movies carry them, and sometimes friends casually drop them in conversations. Most of the time we hear these lines and move on without thinking deeply about them. But every once in a while, a single quote appears that stays in your mind for years. One line that suddenly makes many decisions in life feel clearer.

There is one quote that always catches me off guard and forces me to pause and reflect. It goes like this: “Ninnu ardham chesuko leni vallakosam ni life enduku waste chesukuntunnav?”

Thanks for reading Chebrolu Sunny Talks! This post is public so feel free to share it.

Share

In simple English, it means: “Why waste your life for people who don’t even understand you?”

At first it sounds like a simple statement, but if you read it slowly and think about it deeply, it becomes powerful. Many of us spend a surprising amount of time worrying about people who never truly understand our intentions, our struggles, or our choices. We worry about what they think, what they might say, or how they might judge our decisions. In the process, we slowly begin to shape our lives around their expectations rather than our own clarity.

Sometimes this happens in our careers. We hesitate to take a step because we think someone might criticize it. We hesitate to try something new because we fear someone might misunderstand it. We hesitate to follow our own path because we are busy explaining ourselves to people who were never really trying to understand us in the first place.

But that quote quietly reminds us of something very simple. Not everyone is meant to understand your journey. Every person carries a different background, different experiences, and different perspectives. Expecting everyone to fully understand your decisions is unrealistic. When we accept that truth, something interesting happens: our minds become lighter.

Think about work for a moment. Many people spend energy worrying about what colleagues or acquaintances think about their progress. Someone may question your choice of role, your salary, your career path, or even the speed at which you are moving forward. But if you pause and ask yourself one honest question — am I moving in a direction that allows me to grow, learn, and sustain my life? — the noise outside begins to fade.

If you have enough to eat, enough to keep learning, and enough direction to move forward, constantly comparing yourself with others only drains your energy. Every person is riding their own horse in life. Some horses run fast early. Some run steadily for the long race. Some take time before they even start moving. But the race itself is personal.

This quote does not encourage ignoring people completely or becoming careless about relationships. It simply reminds us to be selective about whose opinions truly deserve space in our minds. Guidance from people who care about your growth is valuable. But the constant judgment of people who never tried to understand your path should not decide how you live.

Life becomes easier when we stop explaining ourselves to everyone and start focusing on building something meaningful for ourselves. Clarity grows when energy is invested in progress instead of approval.

Sometimes a single line is enough to reset our perspective. And this one does exactly that.

Why waste your life trying to satisfy people who never understood you in the first place?

If this quote made you pause and reflect, share it with someone who might need to hear it today. Sometimes the right words at the right time can bring a lot of clarity.

Thanks for reading Chebrolu Sunny Talks! You attend a family gathering, a festival, a wedding, or even a simple visit to a relative’s house. Everything starts warmly. People ask how you are doing, how your studies are going, how life has been. But sooner or later, the same question arrives. Sometimes gently, sometimes directly, sometimes with a curious smile.

“So… what are you doing next?”

At first glance, it seems like a harmless question. In many cases it comes from genuine interest. Relatives want to know what path you are taking, whether you are studying further, preparing for exams, applying for jobs, or planning something new. But when the same question repeats itself from ten different people in the same room, it begins to feel less like curiosity and more like pressure.

For many students and young professionals, this question appears at the most uncertain moments of their lives. Right after finishing school. After completing graduation. During the first job search. In the middle of a career transition. These are phases where clarity is still forming. Decisions are still being explored. Yet the expectation from the outside world often assumes that every step should already be perfectly planned.

The truth is that modern careers rarely move in straight lines anymore. The generation before us often followed a predictable sequence: study, secure a stable job, grow gradually within one organization. Today’s landscape is far more complex. Industries evolve quickly, new fields appear almost every year, and career paths often include experimentation, learning curves, and unexpected turns. It is normal for someone to take time to discover what suits them best.

Yet social conversations still operate on an older timeline. People expect clear answers: which company, which degree, which country, which salary package. When someone says they are still exploring options or figuring things out, the response can sometimes carry subtle disappointment or confusion. That reaction is rarely intentional, but it can leave young people feeling as though they are somehow falling behind.

What is often forgotten is that every individual moves at a different pace. Some people find direction early. Others need time to experiment, fail, learn, and rebuild before they discover where they truly belong. That process does not mean they lack ambition. In many cases, it means they are taking the time to build something meaningful instead of rushing into the first available option.

Family support plays a powerful role in these moments. Encouragement can give someone confidence to explore possibilities. Constant comparison, however, can quietly replace curiosity with anxiety. A simple shift in conversation can make a difference. Instead of asking only about the next step, asking about what someone is learning, what interests they are exploring, or what skills they are building can open a much more supportive dialogue.

Life is not a race with identical milestones for everyone. Some journeys begin with corporate careers. Others begin with research, entrepreneurship, creative work, or continued education. Some paths change direction multiple times before they settle into something fulfilling.

The next time we meet a student or a young professional navigating this stage, perhaps the better question is not just “What are you doing next?” but “What are you discovering about yourself right now?” That question invites conversation rather than pressure.

If this thought resonates with you, share it with someone who might be navigating that same phase today. Sometimes a small shift in how we ask questions can create a much healthier space for the next generation to grow.

Thanks for reading Chebrolu Sunny Talks! In many parts of our society, especially in India, success is often measured through prestige, comparison, and financial stability. Parents naturally want their children to have secure lives, respected careers, and a future that looks stable. That intention comes from love and responsibility. But somewhere along the way, an important question gets lost: are we prioritizing our children’s happiness and individuality, or are we unintentionally shaping them into machines that simply run toward money and social approval?

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" But sometimes it feels like the real coaching is needed elsewhere. Parents themselves may need more exposure to the range of opportunities available in today’s world. The modern economy is no longer limited to just a few professions. Technology, creative industries, entrepreneurship, research, policy, digital media, and many other fields now offer meaningful and stable careers. Yet the conversation often returns to a narrow set of traditional options because they appear safe and familiar.

When young people are forced into a path without clarity or interest, they may still complete degrees and secure jobs, but something important is missing: ownership. A career built without personal alignment can feel like a long routine rather than a purposeful journey. Many talented individuals end up feeling trapped in roles where they lack freedom, creativity, and fair recognition for their efforts. They work hard, but the work rarely feels like their own choice.

Every individual has different capabilities. Some people are naturally inclined toward entrepreneurship and building businesses. Others enjoy research, creative work, social impact, or technological innovation. If those capabilities are allowed to grow, the outcome can be extraordinary. But if they are suppressed under constant comparison, potential slowly fades into frustration.

None of this means parents should stop guiding their children. Guidance is essential. Experience matters. But guidance works best when it is based on conversation rather than control. When young people are given the space to explore, question, and understand the world around them, they develop stronger foundations. They begin to take responsibility for their own decisions rather than simply following instructions.

Our society is changing rapidly. New industries are emerging, traditional career paths are evolving, and opportunities are becoming more diverse than ever before. The next generation will not succeed by copying someone else’s path; they will succeed by building their own.

Perhaps the real responsibility of parents today is not to decide their child’s destination, but to help them discover it.

If this perspective resonates with you, share it with someone who is guiding a young person through career decisions.
